STAATSBURG, N.Y. (3/27/23) — Country homes in New York City….it may sound unlikely, but in earlier
centuries, there were beautiful, stately homes, with lovely grounds and bucolic surroundings in what we
now know to be a dense urban environment. Revisit some of the lost country houses of New York City at
Staatsburgh with a lecture presented by architectural historian, TR Revella-Hamilton, followed by a
reception and optional mansion tour, on Sunday, April 16 at 2:00pm. Advance tickets are recommended:
www.LostCountryHouses.Eventbrite.com Lecture and reception tickets are $16; an optional mansion tour
is also available for $6/person.
Long before the urban development of modern New York, verdant rolling hills dotted with small farms
stretched across the five boroughs. Within this idyllic landscape, affluent New Yorkers built grand country
residences in the Manhattan countryside – countryside that, within a few short generations, would be
consumed by an ever-expanding metropolis.
Attendees may also enjoy a stroll along the Hudson River on the Staatsburgh estate grounds, or a hike
on the woodland trails in adjacent Mills and Norrie State Parks. Staatsburgh is located a few short miles
from Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, Springwood, the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the
Culinary Institute of America and Rhinebeck’s charming downtown area. To see a full list of Staatsburgh’s
programs, visit: www.Bookeo.com/StaatsburghSHS; To learn about the programs and projects of The
