Mississippi Fiddle Tunes with Harry Bolick and Nathan Bontrager
August 13 @ 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM EDT$15
Harry Bolick sings and performs on fiddles and guitar. He will be sharing many tunes and songs unheard since they were collected in manuscript form in Mississippi in the 1930s, along with engaging stories of the history of their collection and sources.
Special guest Nathan Bontrager will accompany Harry on cello, making for an interesting mix. In recent times the cello has found a new place in the music world. Playing old-time fiddle tunes, both lead and backup, Nathan has mastered many styles on his cello and his playing is a natural for Mississippi fiddle tunes. Tompkins Corners is thrilled to bring these two masters together for a very special concert.
We will follow the concert with a potluck dinner. All welcome. And then an evening of Old-time fiddle tunes jam session. Bring your instruments along and join the fun.
While in the Mississippi State Archives tracking down Abbot Ferris’s beautiful photographic portraits of musicians from 1939, Harry discovered, to his amazement, a treasure trove of earlier fiddle tunes in manuscript form. Since then he has worked to understand how this collection came to exist and be set aside. With Stephen T. Austin, Bolick has transcribed the subsequent 1939 audio recordings. Mississippi Fiddle Tunes and Songs from the 1930s presents the history of the collecting work, with over three hundred of the tunes and songs and a beautiful selection of period photographs.
Harry’s latest recording, his eighth, is “Tunes from the Book”, and can be heard at: https://harrybolick.bandcamp.com/album/tunes-from-the-book. He has taught fiddle and mandolin weekly in Garrison, NY, and is currently traveling in the US doing house concerts, workshops, festivals and presentations to share these unique Mississippi fiddle tunes.
