July 3, 2024, Garrison, NY – Garrison Art Center (GAC) is pleased to announce Natural Selection, an exhibition featuring common plants by Jackie Skrzynski. This is the artist’s first solo show at Garrison Art Center. The exhibition will run from August 24 – September 15 with an opening reception on August 24, from 5-7 pm.

Throughout her career, Skrzynski’s art delves into the intertwined relationship between humans and nature, using the structural similarities between anatomy and botany to depict the ephemeral qualities of life. Her recent paintings depict common plants in uncommon ways. The woods near her home provide inspiration and a sense of connection to a larger natural system. Observing growth, decay, and rebirth, Skrzynski confronts her mortality and the ephemeral quality of life. Her work emphasizes the natural world’s beauty and transience, especially when witnessing the change of seasons evoking a sense of humility and introspection.  Skrzynski intends to draw and paint what she observes and how it feels to observe it, depicting what she finds visually compelling in hopes of engaging the viewer with color, form, and light.

Skrzynski has gained recognition through numerous national and international exhibitions, publications, grants, and residencies. Beyond her studio practice, she is passionate about bringing art to the community in creative ways, such as with her pop-up exhibition vehicle, PUG PROJECTS, and the immersive landscape experience, the SILENT WALKS. Skrzynski is actively involved in the creative community in Newburgh, NY.

In addition to the exhibition, Jackie will give an artist talk on Saturday, September 14 from 2:30 to 4 pm, which is free and open to the public.

Jackie Skrzynski | Natural Selection will be on view in the Balter Gallery, concurrent with the exhibition Looking Back: Portraits by Joseph Radoccia in our Gillette Gallery.
