July 3, 2024, Garrison, NY – Garrison Art Center (GAC) is pleased to announce Looking Back: Portraits
by Joseph Radoccia, an exhibition of large-scale portraits. This is the artist’s first solo show at Garrison
Art Center. The exhibition will run from August 24 – September 15 with an opening reception on
Saturday, August 24, from 5 – 7 pm.
Radoccia’s large-scale portraits began as a technical experiment, he set out to challenge his belief
that small-scale paintings with precious materials are essential for creating intimacy between viewer
and art. His goal was to explore methods of sustaining intimate engagement on a larger scale using
more immediate and vulnerable materials. By painting close friends and elders, Radoccia’s aim was
to convey feelings of friendship, respect, warmth, and love. The process starts with a photo session
where the model relaxes into absolute repose, staring directly into the artist’s eyes, creating a tension
between trust and vulnerability that is captured in the portrait.
-more-
Rendered on five-foot-tall paper using pencil, house paint, and acrylic medium, Radoccia’s portraits
employ a representational style to make an impact from a distance and draw viewers in for a closer,
more intimate experience. The direct gaze in the portraits invites viewers to explore the materials and
process, where the vulnerability of the paper, the visible grid, and the varied drawing styles interact
to form the final likeness. This layered experience mirrors the process of first impressions evolving into
deeper understanding, reflecting the complexity of truly knowing another person.
In addition to the exhibition, Joseph will give an Artist Talk on Saturday, September 14 from 2:30 –
4 pm, which is free and open to the public.
Looking Back: Portraits by Joseph Radoccia will be on view in the Gillette Gallery, concurrent with
Jackie Skrzynski | Natural Selection, an exhibition of paintings in our Balter Gallery.
