May 3, 2024, Garrison, NY – Garrison Art Center (GAC) is pleased to announce Travelers, Liars, Thieves, an exhibition of paintings, textiles and sculptures by Margaret Lanzetta, Niki Lederer and David Packer. This is the first time the artists are exhibiting as a group at GAC. Travelers, Liars, Thieves will run from May 25 – June 23, 2024, with an opening reception on Saturday, May 25, from 5 – 7 pm and an Artist Talk, moderated by Karlyn Benson, on Sunday, June 9, from 3 – 4 pm.
Collectively, this exhibit explores the intersection of art with contemporary societal issues and global perspectives. Margaret Lanzetta’s paintings examine the fusion of decorative traditions from various cultures, reflecting interconnectedness amidst cultural and political narratives. Niki Lederer’s work highlights environmental concerns by repurposing discarded materials, prompting reflection on mass consumption. Meanwhile, David Packer’s bear sculptures serve as metaphors for personal, economic, and political upheavals, embodying themes of migration, resilience, and the delicate balance between humanity and nature.

Margaret Lanzetta’s paintings investigate cross currents of world decorative traditions in relation to contemporary cultural and political narratives and connectedness. Globally sourced textiles, such as contemporary Indian sari fabric, Thai and Chinese silks, or domestic cotton, are pieced together and stamped or silkscreened with repeating multicultural motifs.
Niki Lederer’s vibrant flags and banners advocate for new environmental approaches. By mining the overwhelming available, curbside-harvested, post-consumer plastic and discarded umbrella fabrics, Niki seeks to draw the viewer’s attention to the futility of mass consumption in contemporary life.
David Packer’s bear sculptures are going somewhere: they are on the move. The motivation could be religious, secular, or fearful of persecution. Or they may be moving to greener pastures or better lives. Recent personal, economic, and political upheavals have spurred career changes, relationship re-evaluations, and cross-border migrations. As metaphors for these massive shifts, on an intimate and collective scale, the bears process forward in solidarity.
In addition to the exhibition, the artists will give a talk , moderated by Karlyn Benson, on June 9 from 3 – 4 pm. This event will be free and open to the public.
Travelers, Liars, Thieves will be on view in the Gillette Gallery, concurrent with Rose Window, an exhibition by Werner Sun in the Balter Gallery. The Galleries at Garrison Art Center are open Tuesday – Sunday, 10 am – 5 pm, except for the exhibition’s opening day – when the hours are 12 – 7 pm.
