Teaching Artists of Carmel and North Salem School Districts & International Sculptor Among Honored at Camp Herrlich’s UnCorked & OnTap

Fine artist Amanda Lynne, Chair of Carmel Central School District’s Art Department, has taught 13,000 students and counting, with the start of another school year upon us. Graphic artist Jan Malin, North Salem Middle/High School Art Teacher, has had thousands in her classes over the years, with her experience teaching in schools ranging from NY to CT to VT and more. Internationally renowned sculptor Michael Keropian, has been teaching art classes for 28 years in venues ranging from NYC’s Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine to the Katonah Arts Center in Westchester County, NY. All three teaching artists are to be honored as recipients of H. G. Fairfield Arts’ Grasshopper Awards at Camp Herrlich’s September 30th event – UnCorked & OnTap – that benefits their Scholarship Fund.

Kim Blacklock’s President of H. G. Fairfield Arts Center for the Environment explains: “The Grasshopper Awards honor those forward thinking people in our communities who really put themselves out there for positive change.  Together, these artists impact thousands of students each year, passing on their passion and professionalism on a daily basis.  They open new worlds for the youth and adults they teach.”

Sept. 30th’s Uncorked & On Tap event benefits Camp Herrlich’s scholarships, which grant a chance at life-changing, fun educational and environmental programs to over 75% of their youth participants. Over 5,000 children per year from areas all over New York and New Jersey participate in Camp Herrlich’s programs. H. G. Fairfield Arts honors H. G. Fairfield and his granddaughter Kathie Fairfield Freston each time the Grasshopper Awards are presented. Since the grasshopper can only physically move forward, the arts and environmental organization’s Founder’s grandfather, H. G. Fairfield, chose the grasshopper as his insurance company’s trademark back in 1902.  Amanda Lynne, Jan Malin, and Michael Keropian have hearts and talents that create positive ripple effects within students’ and families’ lives as we all move forward together into the future.

Blacklock adds: “H. G. Fairfield Arts is thrilled to have the Grasshopper Awards at UnCorked & OnTap and to recognize Amanda, Jan, and Michael for their years of steadfast devotion to the creative future of our youth and communities. We are three years into our partnership with Camp Herrlich, providing hundreds of local and visiting youth in their summer programs access to residential professional teaching artists in our Arts at Camp program; one can find dozens of films made by youth on H. G. Fairfield Arts’ and Camp Herrlich’s YouTube channels.

H. G. Fairfield Arts’ President, Kim Blacklock, speaks to why they recognize arts and community leadership with the Grasshopper Awards: “We participated in the SUNY New Paltz CREEO 2014 study of 52 arts and cultural organizations in Putnam County, in which there was information from 25 of us which showed 921 workers in 100,000 people, with a total economic impact of $ 11.5 million, with 175 thousand visitors injecting $ 6 million directly into the Putnam County economy. Direct expenditures of $ 7.9 million by arts & culture organizations generated indirect spending of $ 3.6 million that creates jobs in other sectors.”

Americans for the Arts note: “These arts-centric businesses play an important role in building and sustaining economic vibrancy. They employ a creative workforce, spend money locally, generate government revenue, and are a cornerstone of tourism and economic development.”

Kim Blacklock states; “Arts is cultural capital: it is a great time for anyone to follow their creative passions and become the future. Knowing the economic power of the arts and environmental stewardship as it plays into the booming NYS and Mid-Hudson Valley Tourism Industry, our partnership with Camp Herrlich reinforces immediately, to literally 1000’s of youth and adults, the tremendous possibilities of good ideas and working together creatively. Join us as we help Camp Herrlich and their Scholarship and Building Funds provide even more participants with outstanding experiences in nature, the arts, and leadership training. The teaching artists we honor in Amanda Lynne, Jan Malin, and Michael Keropian introduce the next generations to the possibilities within art and art careers ”

Saturday 6 pm September 30th at the Putnam County Golf Course in Mahopac, NY, with wine tasting, beer sampling, appetizers, silent and the ever entertaining live auctions, dinner buffet, desserts and music, attendees will celebrate the generosity of all those who help families afford their children and youth the access to Camp Herrlich’s environmental, educational, and arts programs; in the past 25 years untold numbers of children and youth (estimates near 100,000) were granted the supported opportunity to experience our extraordinary Putnam County natural environment and Camp Herrlich’s year-round programming.
